Makapuu Beach is both a popular bodyboarding and surfing spot on the windward/eastern side of Oahu. A newly constructed parking lot near the point has provided easy access to nearby hiking trails.
This short hike to the top of an elevated point provides vistors sweeping views of surrounding beaches and nearby atolls. Makapuu lighthouse sits at the very point and marks safe passage for boats passing through the Kaiwi Channel between Oahu and Molokai.
Additional hiking trails around the point are available for the the more adventorous hiker. These trails are largely unmarked and some meander onto private property.
Hikers exploring areas close to the shoreline should also be cautious of tide levels. Some areas can become completely submerged during high tides making it difficult and dangerous to navigate.
