Ala Moana Beach Park is a nearby alternative to the crowded shores of Waikiki Beach. Located directly over the Ala Wai Canal just south of the popular Ala Moana Mall. Residents can often be seen fishing here and relaxing in the water water which is walled off from the ocean currents making it a safe are for kids to enjoy.
Many special events occur here yearly including the very popular lantern floating ceremony Toro Nagashi which is usually held during the end of May.
Despite being a popular beach desitination for local residents the park is also a frequented by the homeless population of Honolulu. The Ala Wai boat harbor neighbors the park on the east side which is home to numerous sail boats and watercraft.
Very nearby is the one of the most popular south shore surf breaks Ala Moana Bowls. This break is know for its fast and hollow shape making it a favorite with pro surfers.
