Just outside of Hilo on the very beggining of Saddle road lies Kaumana Caves. A convienient pull off on the side of the road puts you directly at the mouth of these caves formed by the Mauna Loa eruptions of 1881.
Former lava tubes are now filled with lush jungle foliage and a simple walking path leading into the caves depths.
Exploring the caves should be done with a flashlight and it is advisible to avoid the area during hard rains. Its proximity to Rainbow Falls makes it a very easy stop-over when exploring the outskirts of Hilo.
